Esterillos Beach
About Esterillos Beach
Esterillos is composed of three beaches in a stretch of approximately 2.5 to 3 miles of beach, Esterillos West, Central and East.
West Esterillos
West is the most popular and the most surfed of the three. It consists of a beachbreak with a rock shelf that extends several hundred meters from the beach. There is a statue of a mermaid at the end of the shelf that is a good takeoff indicator. When the tide is lower, it will break far out producing big, soft walls that are ideal for longboarders. On the inside the wave becomes more hollow and can give good tubes, especially on higher tides. It is a favorite spot for surfers from Jacó and Hermosa.
There is a small grocery store and a couple of restaurants/bars, and there is usually at least a small crowd.
Central Esterillos
Centro is approximately a two-mile stretch of beach sandwiched between two river mouths. It breaks best with a south/southwest swell during higher tides. The center breaks best from the chest to a foot overhead. Larger waves will close out. Popular spot for locals early in the morning before the wind picks up.
East Esterillos
This is the most remote of the Esterillos beaches and is rarely, if ever, crowded. It is at its best with a south/southwest swell that reaches chest-deep and overhead. This is a beachbreak that breaks only during high tide.
